There are two great exhibitions on at 45 Downstairs Gallery in Melbourne.
The first exhibition showcases the amazingly beautiful sculptural work of young indigenous artist Georgia MacGuire. Made form the bark of Malaleuca trees, the forms are eerily human and reference the cultural connection to country. Georgia is the Victorian Indigenous Art Award 2013 winner.
The second exhibition -Women In Design- was curated by Daniella Casamento with the assistance of the Design Institute of Australia. It celebrates the contribution Melbourne women make to our built environment. Representing a broad cross section of design fields including Architecture, Interior, Furniture and Textile Design. Look out for interesting knitted design “tubes” created by Jenny Underwood and Leanne Zilka. It was also nice to learn that one of my favourite sculptures in Melbourne was created by Susan Hewitt. Called “The Great Petition” it commemorates the 100 years of the Women’s Vote in Victoria (2008)
Both exhibitions are till the 22nd of February so don’t miss out!
